Paying tribute to a much-loved McLaren Vale character, Harry’s Deli has just opened as part of our major cellar door refurbishment.
Drawing its name from Harry Kilaitis, a gifted carpenter who spent many days working out of Sparrow’s Lodge at Wirra Wirra, Harry’s Deli offers light meals such as toasted paninis, salads and platters sourced from local and international producers – including a number of our McLaren Vale neighbours.
Taking pride of place in the cooler months is the famous Trott Pie, created by renowned chef, David Swain of Fino fame who has kindly given permission for Wirra Wirra to offer it to famished tasters and travellers.
Enjoy a seat by the open fire, or take in the sun and vineyard views from the open courtyard.
And because it’s a Deli, if you love a particular meat, cheese – or even the beans behind our signature “Church” blend of coffee created by local stars Dawn Patrol – we’ll wrap it up and send it home with you.
There are wines by the glass and a beer or two as well.
Harry’s Deli is open from 10am – 4pm Monday to Saturday and 11am-4pm on Sundays.
And finally, a little story about Harry who made his way to Australia quite by chance. Having planned to leave his ravaged home in Lithuania with a bunch of mates to join the Royal Canadian Mounties, unfortunately for Harry – but in a turn of luck for McLaren Vale – the boys spent their last night at home celebrating their good fortune with a little too much gusto, only to sleep in and miss the boat the following day! The next ship to sail was heading to Australia and so Harry’s journey began.
