From Wirra Wirra’s own biodynamically farmed Chook Block Vineyard planted in 1960, there comes from time to time very small parcels of exceptionally intense, high quality fruit. In the very best years this fruit is vinified separately to create wines of unique interest, they are released in tiny quantities under this simple and unpretentious label… Chook Block. Initially crafted from the great 1998 vintage, Chook Block takes its name from one of Greg Trott’s original broiler chicken sheds, adjacent to the vineyard itself. To date we have produced six acclaimed vintages – 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 - with 112 dozen of this 2016 vintage released in September 2019.
Garnet with a bright crimson edge.
Deeply fruited with blackberry, liqueur cherry, mulberry and satsuma plum. Floral notes, 5-spice and licorice are also present here, along with dark chocolate, toast, cedar and tar.
Generous and seductive fruit is balanced by oak influence and maturation qualities of leather and tobacco, as well as baked earth and dried thyme. A brooding palate, velvet tannins add substantially to the texture and weight. A wine of richness, depth, complexity and polish.
- Food Pairing
Wagyu, mushroom and herb pie.
