2015 Scarce Earth Patritti Single Vineyard Shiraz
- Cellar Door
- Bell Ringers
- McLaren Vale
- Bottle size
- 750 mL
From vintage 2015 we selected our best single vineyard parcels of shiraz to blend the wine that would
become RSW. Of these, we identified the Patritti Block as being exceptional and set aside a barrel for
the Scarce Earth project. Just 49 cases of this wine were made, making it a rare example of the unique
character of the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale.
Deepest crimson with a violet edge.
Intense boysenberry, plums and blackberries are infused with a violet perfume and dry spices.
The palate displays a bright core of dark fruits, it is layered and long with a lovely taut and muscular
line. Restraint, purity and indisputable power. A wine with amazing ageing potential.
- Winemaking Notes
Hand-harvested at optimal tannin and flavour ripeness, a parcel of shiraz from the Patritti Old Block
was then crushed and destemmed to two-tonne open fermenters. Ferments were tasted twice daily
to determine the level of hand plunging and maceration required. At the required level of tannin and
fruit extraction, the ferment was basket pressed, with winemakers making the ‘press cut’ at the first
sign of tannin hardness. After pressing, the wine was transferred to a barrel chosen to complement
the lifted aromatics and unique palate structure we have seen over the years from this vineyard. The
wine completed malolactic fermentation in oak, at which point an old puncheon was separated from
the batch to be part of the Scarce Earth program. After 18 months of oak maturation the barrel was
minimally filtered prior to bottling in November 2016.
