Sparrow's Lodge
Standing watchfully next to the main gate in Woodhenge is a residence in classic Aussie style. After Bob Wigley died, the winery and a few acres were bought by his foreman Vern Sparrow. When the buildings fell into disuse and were damaged by a storm in the 1940's, the Sparrows built this house with the salvaged materials. Corrugated iron from the winery roof provided exterior cladding; jarrah heading down boards formed the verandah and slate slabs from the fermenting tanks made a floor for kitchen and bathroom.
Various vintage vagabonds working shifts and numerous visitors have found a little comfort and a lot of conviviality within its walls, which, if they could talk, would have a few stories to tell even as new ones are being written.
The name Sparrow's Lodge has also been bestowed upon a small volume of special parcels of wines that are only available at our Cellar Door.
As a foot note for non-Australians, "The Lodge" also happens to be the name of the relatively opulent residence of the Prime Minister of Australia. We think this is more than appropriate.
