Wirra Wirra icon Greg Trott, succumbed to a long and noble battle with bowel cancer on March 5, 2005. 

As the Angelus bell at the winery rung out to announce his passing, a small parcel of shiraz grapes from David Paxton’s “Jones’ Block” arrived for crushing. Despite their grief and the chaos of vintage, the Wirra Wirra tribe had the foresight to set aside these grapes with the thought that they could one day produce a commemorative wine in honour of Trott.  

This idea was brought to life once we settled on a plan to use the wine to generate proceeds to assist the Flinders Medical Centre, where Trott was nursed throughout his illness, with their ongoing medical research.

This labour of love has resulted in 1000 limited edition, individually numbered magnums of 2005 McLaren Vale Shiraz, known as “Gentlemen, That’s Stumps”, in memory of Trott and his passion for the game of cricket.

Having donated the wine, we asked our business partners (Tucker Creative, Collotype Labels, AMCOR, Yalumba, Ramodin Capsules SA and Saverglass) if they would come to the party and assist with providing the bottling, packaging and presentation free of charge – a request to which they happily obliged.

With their assistance, we are now offering the 2005 Gentlemen That’s Stumps Shiraz to our Bell Ringers for $60 per boxed 1.5L magnum, with all proceeds going to the Flinders Medical Centre researchers in their quest to find ways to prevent and cure bowel cancer.
